In freshwater ecosystem, phototrophic biofilms play a crucial role through adsorption and sequestration of organic and inorganic pollutants. However, extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) secretion by phototrophic biofilms exposed to metals is poorly documented. This work evaluated the physiological responses of phototrophic biofilms by exposing three microorganisms (cyanobacterium ...
Collective motion of self-sustained swarming flows has recently provided examples of small scale turbulence arising where viscosity effects are dominant. We report the first observation of an universal inverse enstrophy cascade in concentrated swarming sperm consistent with a body of evidence built from various independent measurements. We found a well-defined k-3 power-law decay of ...

Multi-plane telecentric 2D particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements were performed over and within the interstices of rough beds in an open-channel flow with low relative submergence. Two rough beds constituted of cubes and elongated cuboid obstacles in a square array were investigated with the same modified relative submergence. The telecentric method allowed the complete fluid space ...

The three-dimensional dynamics of shallow vortex dipoles is investigated by means of an innovative 3D-3C (three dimensions, three components) scanning PIV technique. In particular, the three-dimensional structure of a frontal spanwise vortex is characterized. The technique also allows the computation of the pressure field, which is not available using standard 2D PIV measurement.

CiteSeerX - Document Details (Isaac Councill, Lee Giles, Pradeep Teregowda): We consider a boundary layer flow horizontally homogeneous in the presence of a vertical stratification and of a sinusoidal topography. We present a simple model describing the interaction between the mean flow and the packet of internal waves emitted at the bottom, assuming that it obeys to the laws of the refraction.
