Fee mining sites are places where you can pay a fee to dig for rocks, minerals, gold or gemstones and keep whatever you find. There are many places in the United States where you can pan for gold and have a reasonable chance of finding some. There are also places where you can find ruby, sapphire, opal and many other gemstones.
Heavy mineral sands are a class of ore deposit which is an important source of zirconium, titanium, thorium, tungsten, rare-earth elements, the industrial minerals diamond, sapphire, garnet, and occasionally precious metals or gemstones.. Heavy mineral sands are placer deposits formed most usually in beach environments by concentration due to the specific gravity of the mineral grains.
Rutile also lends its name to the rutile mineral group. The only other gem-quality member of this group that gets faceted (rarely) is cassiterite. As needle inclusions, rutile crystals occur in a wide variety of gem materials, such as quartz and agate (sagenite). Rutilated quartz pieces can make stunning jewelry stones as well as display specimens.
Zirconium is also produced as a byproduct of mining the titanium minerals ilmenite and rutile. Niobium and tantalum are commonly found in the minerals pyrochlore and columbite. Cobalt is mined specifically from ores like cobaltite, but also as a byproduct of copper and nickel mining (Raymond, 1995).
Mining Heavy Minerals: Excavators remove heavy mineral sands at the Concord Mine in south-central ia. Weakly consolidated sands containing about 4% heavy minerals are excavated and processed to remove ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile, and zircon. The sands were weathered and eroded from an anorthocite exposure a short distance away.

The most common member of the Rutile Group.Rutile is one of the five forms of titanium dioxide, TiO 2, found in nature. Sellaite (magnesium fluoride, MgF 2) also has a rutile-type structurepare 'UM1987-04-O:Ti'. Note on the type locality: Since Werner introduced rutile in 1800, Horcajuelo de la Sierra (originally erronously reported as Cajuelo) in the province of Burgos in Spain has been ...
The result of gas pockets trapped in a cooling lava flow, crystals found in Utah’s Marysvale region range from the black, metallic bixbyite to purple amethysts up to one inch long. A more scarce find, the mineral rutile contains needle-like crystals, while bixbyite is found in isometric, cube-like forms.
